Deana Ward

 
Deana Ward is a proud Choctaw from Durant, OK. She grew up in a multi-generational family that spoke fluent Choctaw. She attended Grace Indian Baptist Church as a child and still maintains the traditions that were modeled for her. Deana went on to raise five children all while earning a doctorate in Psychology. She is a loyal Oklahoma State University alumni. She came to beadwork a little late in life but quickly learned different stitches and how to incorporate Southeastern Native culture into her art. Her work centers around cultural identity and the methods in which we evolve.  Today, Deana works primarily with children.

Choctaw belief systems teach us that red birds are special messengers.  Two years ago, a red bird flew in front of my car.  I almost hit it.  It was as if the bird had to get my attention.  I knew I would be receiving a message soon.  A few hours later, I was told my cousin had passed away.  Months later, I was on my way to the grocery store.  I was grieving the loss of my little brother who had passed away that morning.  A red bird flew in my view while I was at a stop sign.  He was playing in water.  I was comforted by his presence.  After my brother’s funeral, I was sharing with my daughter how the number of people in heaven that I love keeps growing.  She immediately reminded me the number on earth continues to grow as well.  The backside of the purse is a reminder for me to remember the past but also to remain mindful of the present.
