Indigenous creation stories across Turtle Island honour a common theme: our existence is always traced back to a single woman and her immeasurable sacrifice.
Skywoman sacrificed her home to come to earth. She sacrificed her daughter during the birth of the twins. And ultimately she sacrificed herself to become the moon to go back to the sky. Many Indigenous creation stories have endless tales of sacrifice, whether it’s from animals, nature, or spirits.
Women have implemented this original sacrifice into our lives. Giving birth to new life is a sacrifice of mind, body and spirit
