    Joyce Nevaquaya Harris

    Comanche

Joyce Nevaquaya Harris (Comanche Nation) hails from the Penetuka and Yamparika bands, with ties to the Little Pony and Black Knife Society. She is also of Crow and Chickasaw descent. Joyce grew up surrounded by art and artists, including her late father, Doc Tate Nevaquaya, a self-taught artist and Native flute revivalist. She honors the importance of continuing to paint Indigenous stories and history while carrying on her father's legacy of art.

In 2018, Joyce received a prestigious commission to paint portraits of the chairmen and councilmen from the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara. This undertaking proved to be one of her most ambitious and exhilarating experiences. She finds deep honor in painting people and strives to capture the essence of their hearts through her art.

One of her most significant achievements has been the acquisition of her painting Peace by the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., where it currently hangs in the Secretary of the Interior’s office, an honor she holds with immense pride.

Joyce enjoys working with a variety of colors and often combines subjects and designs to create captivating pieces. She is particularly moved by observing people and dancers, which she skillfully captures in her paintings.
