Incho’wa is a Chikashanompa word meaning tattoo, and it has served as a moniker for my ongoing portrait series. This body of work celebrates the revitalization of southeastern ancestral markings by documenting those that bear them. The portraits feature Indigenous people photographed in a 1930s film aesthetic and dressed in traditional regalia, contemporary regalia, or clothing that represents the bearer’s connection to their southeastern Indigenous community. The style of the images is rooted in the portrait photography of the predominantly white and conventional promotional images used in the past to market beauty standards that excluded Indigenous people. This period also continued to reinforce tattooing as a taboo. The photo set utilizes the visual language once used to reject the beauty of Indigenous people to highlight their continued existence and the ever-evolving exquisiteness and style inherent to the bearers of incho’wa.
