Understanding Regalia Book

Red Earth’s Understanding Regalia book offers a first-hand look at the artistry, meaning, and tradition of Native American regalia. Through powerful photography and accessible storytelling, the book highlights handmade regalia worn in today’s powwow arena and explains the cultural significance of each element.

Inside you will find introductions to powwow dance styles such as Northern Traditional, Men’s Fancy, Women’s Fancy Shawl, and the Prairie Chicken Dance, alongside detailed images of beadwork, bustles, moccasins, roaches, and more. Each style reflects not only a form of movement, but also the history and values of the tribes represented, including Lakota, Meskwaki, and other Plains and Woodland peoples.

This book makes clear that regalia is never a costume. Every feather, bead, and stitch carries meaning for the dancer, connecting them to family, community, and cultural identity.
