This 14 ¼" W x 18 ¼" H print, titled "Served with Honor", by Cherokee Nation artist Bob Thomason, commemorates the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers. The artwork depicts an African American soldier serving with distinction, embodying the courage and dedication of these historic regiments.
The Buffalo Soldiers were African American regiments in the United States Army that served on the American frontier and in conflicts during the 19th and 20th centuries. Formed after the Civil War, these soldiers replaced the U.S. Colored Troops, with the first regiment—the 10th Cavalry—established in 1866. Over the years, Buffalo Soldiers fought Native Americans, mapped uncharted territories, and served in pivotal wars such as the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. They were even among the first park rangers in the Sierra Nevada.
The nickname "Buffalo Soldiers" was given by Plains Indians, inspired by the soldiers' dark, curly hair resembling buffalo fur and their resilience in battle—a sacred and honorable symbol in Native culture.
Bob Thomason, a celebrated Cherokee Nation artist, is known for creating works that leave room for viewer interpretation, turning each painting into a shared journey. His art, steeped in history and philosophy, invites the audience to reflect on its deeper meanings. "Served with Honor" serves as both a powerful tribute and a historical lesson, making it a significant piece for collectors and history enthusiasts alike.
