First Fire Tender

Layers of green and blue surround a water spider and her glowing ember in this depiction of the First Fire by Cherokee artist Alix Robinson.

On the pond floor, the spider tends to her ember inside a water bubble. Her basket rests askew beside her, extending around the wrapped edge of the canvas. Warm reds and oranges draw attention to the spider and the fire she carefully protects beneath the water.
