Artist Applications Available for 2013 Red Earth Festival

    Artist applications for new artists interested in participating in the 27th annual Red Earth Festival art market are currently being accepted for the event scheduled June 7-9, 2013 at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City.  Applications will be accepted through January 2, 2013.  The award-winning festival is considered the world’s largest event of its kind, drawing thousands of art enthusiasts to a three-day weekend celebrating Native American visual art and dance.

    The Red Earth juried art market annually showcases more than 200 artists representing Native tribes and nations from throughout the United States and Canada.  The event drew more than 30,000 attendees in 2012 and is a past recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Redbud Award for “Outstanding Event” from the Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department and recognition as a Top 100 Event in North America by the American Bus Association.  

     Red Earth Festival art market categories include contemporary and traditional art forms including cultural items, jewelry, paintings, drawings, graphics/photography, sculpture, pottery, and clothing/textiles/weaving.  Each category is divided into subdivisions.

    Kiowa painter R.W. Geionety of Oklahoma City received the 2012 AT&T Red Earth Grand Award for Best of Show for his painting entitled “Southern Thunder.”  Jimmie Harrison, a Navajo jeweler from Albuquerque, NM, was recipient of the 2012 Red Earth President’s Award for his “Hopi Maiden & Sunface Lifeline Belt,” and Chase Earles, a Caddo potter from Ada, OK  received the 2011 Red Earth Kathleen Everett Upshaw Award for his traditional pottery entitled “Tah-Nah-Hah ‘Buffalo’.”

    Applicants must be able to provide documents of proof of membership in a federally or state-recognized tribal entity or documents of proof of certification as Indian Artisans by an Indian tribe.  Juried applicants must provide three color images per category of artwork that will be sold in their booth.     Booth space in the Red Earth art market is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
